‘Success is determined by hard work, not by exam marks’, CJI BR Gavai’s statement

Chief Justice (CJI) BR Gavai said on Saturday that the level of success in professional life is determined not by exam results, but by determination, hard work, dedication and commitment to work. He remembered that he was a talented student, but left classes. The Chief Justice said at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of VM Salgaonkar College of Law in Miramar near Panaji that there has been a complete change in the legal education system. Addressing the students of Law College, he said, “Do not go to your rank in the exam, because these results do not determine what level you will achieve success.” Your determination, hard work, dedication and commitment to profession only matters.

CJI Gawai said- he was an extraordinary student

Chief Justice Gawai said that he was an extraordinary student, but often left classes. He said, “But do not try to copy us.” He recalled that when he studied in Mumbai’s Government Law College, he left classes and used to sit on the boundary of the college and his attendance in the classroom. The Chief Judge said, “(I was the one of the last year of law), I had to go to Amravati, because my father (Maharashtra) was not the chairman of my father (Maharashtra) Legislative Council. A dozen times I went to college. A friend of mine who later became a judge of the High Court.

CJI Gawai gave his example

CJI Gawai’s father was the founder of the late RS Gawai Republican Party of India (Gawai). He was the Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1978 to 1982. He later became the Governor of Bihar, Sikkim and Kerala. The Chief Justice said that the student who topped the results later became a lawyer for criminal affairs, while the second -place students became a judge of the High Court. He said, “I was the third one, who is now the Chief Justice of India.” He said that he finished third in the merit list without going to college, but kept reading books and solving the question papers of five years examination.
