New Delhi/Patna: In Bihar, important hearing is going to be held in the Supreme Court today regarding verification of voter list. On this issue, there is a political struggle from the road to the court. 9 parties of India alliance including Congress, RJD have demanded immediate ban on the process of voter list verification. On the other hand, advocate Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a petition saying that only Indian citizens should get the right to vote. The sharp performance of opposition parties in Bihar on this issue and the strict stance of the Election Commission has warmed the atmosphere further.

These 9 parties have filed a petition

A bench of Supreme Court Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Joymalya Bagchi will hear the case today. India alliance parties Congress, TMC, RJD, CPM, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), CPI, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha have filed a petition and questioned the voter list verification. They claim that the names of the poor and women can be removed from the voter list by this process. Apart from this, two social activists Arshad Ajmal and Rupesh Kumar have also challenged the verification process.

Ashwini Upadhyay has also filed a petition

At the same time, advocate Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a petition in support of the Election Commission. He has demanded that the Supreme Court should direct the Commission to be verified in such a way that only Indian citizens remain in the voter list. Upadhyay claimed that the population structure has changed in 200 districts and 1500 tehsils of the country due to illegal infiltration. His petition states that verification is necessary to remove infiltrators from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh from the voter list.

Election Commission cleared the whole thing

The Election Commission has made it clear that only those names will be eligible in the voter list. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said, ‘The voter list was not verified on a large scale after 2003. After a complete investigation, only qualified Indian citizens will be in the voter list. The Commission has decided to verify from house to house in every state of the country so that the names of non-Indians can be removed from the list. According to commission sources, the voter verification campaign will be conducted in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry after Bihar, where assembly elections are to be held in 2026. After this, there is also a plan of verification in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Manipur by 2029.

Opposition parties strongly demonstrated in Bihar

Opposition parties performed strongly against the voter list verification in Bihar. On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took the front in Patna. In Nawada, Tejashwi said, ‘Lalu ji says, the secret of votes means the secret of the small. These people want to take away your rights. There is a conspiracy to cut the names of the poor from the voter list. If your name is not in the list, then you will say that you are not a citizen of this country. We will not tolerate it. ‘ Rahul Gandhi also described it as a conspiracy to take away the rights of the poor. At the same time, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad retaliated on the opposition as to why the opposition is against verification, while it will ensure that only Indian citizens vote.

Supreme Court’s decision will be very important

More than one lakh booth level officers (BLOs) are engaged in the investigation of the voter list in Bihar. The opposition alleges that people of poor and weaker sections will be affected by this process. At the same time, the Election Commission says that the purpose of verification is to remove illegal voters. Today’s hearing of the Supreme Court can prove to be an important turn in this case. All eyes are now on the Supreme Court’s decision. This hearing can affect not only Bihar, but the voter list verification process of the entire country. Will voter verification stop or will the Commission get more strict order? The answer can be found in today’s hearing.
