Beijing: Prior to PM Modi’s visit to Beijing, ‘Global Times’ has advocated united India and China through an editorial. The Global Times asked the two countries to improve their relationship, “There is a Hindu saying … cross your brother’s boat … will reach your own side.” The Global Times has described India-China as a good chance to strengthen its relationship amid the tariff war raised by the US.

What did Global Times write?

China’s leading newspaper Global Times wrote that according to Indian media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Sangathan (SCO) summit held in Tianjin from 31 August to 1 September. If this journey occurs, it will be Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to China in seven years. Although this news has not yet been confirmed by the official agencies of China and India, it has attracted widespread attention to the international community as soon as it comes out. US magazine ‘The Diplomat’ commented, saying, “The relationship between the two neighboring countries has been closer and then deteriorating in the last decade … Now the time has come for another new round conversation.”

Praise of China and India’s economy

The Global Times has also praised the economies of India and China in its article. Whereas just a few days ago, US President Trump addressed India’s economy as dead. Global Times wrote, “China and India together represent more than one-third of the world’s population, and both economies and global impacts are increasing. In such a decisive time, the direction of China-India relations gives even more reasons to attract global attention.

Signs of change in relations

Global Times is written that according to experts, despite the differences and controversies between China and India, some warmth (improvement) signs have appeared in bilateral relations in recent months. After the border clash in 2020, there was a significant decline in China-India relations, which severely affected political beliefs, economic relations and dialogues between people. But the successful meeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2024 indicated a new beginning for bilateral relations. The two countries had agreed at the highest level that “China and India are each other’s development opportunities, not threatened … are ally, not competitive.

Indian diplomacy appreciated

Global Times appreciated Indian diplomacy and wrote that from June 2025, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar traveled to China respectively, which is a rare -level diplomatic activity in recent years. Many bilateral dialogues that were previously stopped, are now resumed or in the process. The two countries have also reiterated that the border dispute should not be allowed to become an obstacle in overall bilateral relations.

Positive steps told Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Global Times has termed the journey to the Kailash Mountains and Mansarovar Lake in the Shizang (Tibet) region of Southwest China for Indian pilgrims. Wrote that along with this, India has also restored a visa for Chinese tourists. Both sides are expecting more progress in relationships by taking advantage of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Travel a new opportunity

The newspaper wrote that if Modi’s visit is this time, it will provide a favorable opportunity to strengthen positive speed in China-India relations. However, there are still several important issues between the two countries that are yet to be resolved. In this, India has made several obstacles such as monitoring of Chinese capital and repression, visa ban of Chinese technical experts, delay in complete restoration of direct flights between the two countries. It has to be removed.

China trip between America tariff war

The Chinese newspaper wrote that the news of PM Modi’s visit to China came at a time when the US government has announced a big increase in tariffs on Indian goods. Some Western media has described Modi’s visit as an attempt to “balance” against the US. However, this approach is unilateral. Today, most of the countries of the world are united against free trade and unilateral tariffs. From China’s point of view, China-India cooperation is not against any third party. Both countries are ancient civilizations, rapid emerging economies and a key member of the global South.

You can increase cooperation in these areas

The newspaper has written that China and India are neighbors and the possibilities of cooperation between them are immense. If this journey of Modi is done, it will work as a comprehensive cooperation for both countries. China and India have shared interests in areas such as anti-terrorism action, trade, and cultural exchange as regional powers. Increasing cooperation through SCO will not only benefit both countries, but it will also contribute to regional peace and prosperity. A healthy China-India relationship brings positive impacts not only to the region, but the whole world. We welcome Prime Minister Modi if he comes with true intentions and practical cooperation schemes. That can be a new beginning of “Dragon and Elephant’s Dance together”.
