Thailand Cambodia Conflict: 32 people killed, thousands of displaced so far; India issued advisory to its citizens

Surin (Thailand): The struggle continues on the fourth day on Saturday in Thailand and Cambodia. So far, 32 people have died in the war between the two countries. While thousands of persons from border areas had to be displaced. The displaced have to take shelter in temporary shelters. Meanwhile, both sides are feared to be faster.

UN emergency meeting

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting in New York on the issue late Friday night. Although no official statement was issued after the meeting, according to a council diplomat, all 15 member countries have urged Thailand and Cambodia to restrain, reduce tension and resolve the dispute peacefully. At the same time, the South-East Asian Nations organization (ASEAN) was also requested to mediate the border dispute.

ASEAN president also appealed to end the struggle

Malaysia, who is currently presiding over ASEAN, has also called upon the two countries to end the immediate struggle and offer arbitration. Cambodia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Chhiya KO said that the emergency meeting was demanded by Cambodia. He reiterated the demand for an unconditional ceasefire and a peaceful solution to the dispute. On the allegations of attack on Thailand, he said, “We are a small country, our Air Force is not even. How can we attack the country with three times large army?”

Thailand held Cambodia responsible

Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Phumtham Vachayachai blamed Cambodia for the death of citizens and attack on a hospital. He says that Thailand has maintained restraint despite provocation and invasion. The Thai Health Ministry said that more than 58,000 people have been displaced from villages of four provinces border due to conflict. According to Cambodia officials, more than 23,000 people have to migrate here. So far 19 people have died in Thailand and 13 in Cambodia in the conflict. There were also clashes in the ancient Ta Mun Thom temple area of the border, on which the two countries claim. The situation still remains tense.

India issued advisory for its citizens in Cambodia

Consultation issued by the Indian Embassy in Cambodia said, “Keeping in mind the clashes issued on the Thailand-Kambodia border, Indian citizens are advised to avoid traveling to these border areas. Along with this, the embassy has also shared a helpline number and email ID for contact in emergency.
