- The Water Resources Department has taken a big and visionary step towards resolving water crisis in Bihar. Principal Secretary of the department Santosh Kumar Malla said that now the surplus water of the Ganges river will be used for irrigation of fields in many districts of South Bihar. Till now, this water was being used only for drinking in Nalanda, Gaya and Nawada districts, but in the coming time it will also be used to irrigate farming.
- He made this announcement during a special discussion held in the auditorium at Irrigation Building, which was the subject – “Ganga Water Supply Scheme”In this discussion Water-life-hariyali mission Senior officials and engineers from 15 different departments joined.
- Big plan to deal with water crisis
- The Principal Secretary described the scheme as a “revolutionary initiative” to deal with the threat of water management and climate change of the state. He said that this step will help the state to rescue the water crisis in the future as well as to make farmers self-sufficient.
- The additional water that comes during the monsoon in the Ganges river through a pipeline Badua reservoir located in Belhar in Banka district It is planned to reach up. This reservoir has not been able to fill the monsoon for a long time, due to which its irrigation capacity has decreased by about 75 to 80 percent.
- If this plan is successful:
- Badua will help fill the reservoir
- Nearby villages and fields will get irrigation facility
- Farmers will not have to depend on monsoon for water
- New schemes from Son and Durgavati reservoir
- Not only Ganga, but other water sources are also being planned. Mr. Mall told that in areas like Aurangabad, Dehri and Sasaram Surface water of Son River Will be used soon for drinking water supply. Other than this Durgavati reservoir From Bhabhua and Mohania cities Water will be supplied to.
- This will provide great relief to those areas where there is a huge water shortage.
- Recharge of other reservoirs from Ganga water
- The state government’s plan is not limited to only one or two reservoirs. Water-life-Hariyali Mission Reservoirs like Morway, Jalkot, Baskot and Garhi Work is also being done towards filling the Ganges with water. During the monsoon, additional water coming into the Ganges river will be collected and sent to these reservoirs.
- The aim of the government is:
- The surplus water of the Ganges should not be wasted
- This gives relief to drought -prone areas of the state
- Become a permanent water source for farming
- Preparation to deal with climate change
- On this occasion, the Engineer Head (Irrigation and Creation) Shri Awadhesh Kumar said, “As long as there is water and greenery, true prosperity is possible in life.” Climate change has now become a global problem, and its effect is clearly visible on our water sources. To deal with this crisis, the state government is working on a scientific, sustainable and practical strategy.
- Protection of ponds and water sources is also a priority
- Mr. Kumar informed that under the Water-Life-Hariyali campaign in the state:
- Old ponds are being encroached
- Water harvesting and groundwater recharge are being encouraged
- Plans are being run at the panchayat level for water management in rural areas
- The common man is being made aware of water conservation
