banke bihari mandir history in hindi: Vrindavan Dham, where Radha-Krishna resides in every particle, is world famous for its divine temples and miraculous stories. A name that especially shines in all of them is the temple of Shri Banke Bihari Ji. But do you know who were the saints who revealed this most prestigious Deity of Vrindavan and how this unique form of Radha and Krishna became accessible to the devotees with his amazing practice? Let us tell you today the story of Sant Shiromani Shri Haridas Ji Maharaj.
Who was Saint Haridas?
Sant Haridas ji was a great saint, poet and musician of the 16th century. He was born in Haridaspur village of Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. He belonged to the Nimbarka sect and did most of his practice in Vrindavan itself. The life of Haridas ji was completely dedicated to devotion and disinterest. Beyond the worldly fascination, he was absorbed in the love of God only. He believed that God could be attained only through music, and he himself was a great teacher of Dhrupad singing. It is said that great musicians like Tansen were also his disciple and used to educate him.
Amazing practice of Saint Haridas in Nidhivan
Saint Haridas ji lived in Nidhivan of Vrindavan and used to live his hut. This is the same place where Radha-Krishna is still recognized at night. Haridas ji used to sit in Nidhivan day and night and performed bhajan-kirtan and cultivation in solitude. His devotion was so deep that he used to feel himself absorbed in Radha-Krishna’s Nitya Vihar. He did not talk to anyone more and was engrossed in his practice. His power of devotion and penance was so intense that God himself was forced to come near him.
Radha-Krishna’s solidity Deity: Manifestation of Banke Bihari ji
It is said that one day the disciple of Swami Haridas said that the rest of the people also want to see Radhe Krishna. Swami Haridas started singing Bhajan, taking care of his feelings. Then a wonderful fast appeared in Nidhivan. It is said that in this supernatural light, a supernatural couple of Radha and Krishna have appeared in front of Saint Haridas ji. This form was so beautiful and seductive that the viewers were mesmerized.
Saint Haridas ji received this divine philosophy with his music practice and exclusive devotion. When he wished the devotees to God, Radha Krishna agreed to stay with him in the same form. On this, Haridas ji said, Kanha, I will keep you a saint, I will somehow keep you with me, but where will I bring new clothes and jewelery for Radha Rani. God became so emotional with the fact of Haridas ji that he made his couple form available as the same Deity so that the devotees could easily see him.
Saint Haridas ji first installed this amazing Deity in a small temple in Nidhivan. Later, for the convenience of the devotees and for the protection of the Deity, the Banke Bihari Mandir was constructed and the Vigraha was transferred there. This Deity is worshiped in Vrindavan today as “Banke Bihari Ji”.
Meaning of the name Banke Bihari:
‘Banke’ means ‘Tribhana’ or bent from three places, which refers to the specific steep posture of Lord Krishna. ‘Bihari’ means ‘enjoyer’ or ‘Vihara’. Thus, Banke Bihari means the God who enjoys his Tribhana posture.
Special beliefs and traditions of the temple:
, Tablet Darshan: One of the most unique characteristics of Banke Bihari temple is the tradition of ‘tableau darshan’. Here the idol of God is repeatedly covered and opened with curtains. There are many beliefs behind this. One belief is that the beauty of the idol of Banke Bihari ji is so intense that devotees can lose their care. The second belief is that Banke Bihari ji is very fickle and does not want to give the devotees an opportunity to blink his eyelids, so he is repeatedly covered with screen.
, Mangala Aarti is not there: Banke Bihari temple does not have a Mangala Aarti like other temples. There is only makeup, Rajbhog and Sleep Aarti here. The reason for this is believed that Swami Haridas ji considered Banke Bihari ji as a small child and did not like to lift him early in the morning.
, Prasad and enjoyment: In the temple, a special enjoyment of Makhan-Mishri is offered to God, which devotees receive with great reverence.
, Holi celebration: The festival of Holi in Vrindavan is world famous, and the celebration of Holi in the Banke Bihari temple is celebrated with a different enthusiasm and grandeur. The whole atmosphere becomes devotional with Holi, color-gulal and bhajan-kirtan of flowers.
, Flower bungalow: In the summer months, a bungalow of flowers is made to protect God from heat, in which God is seated. It is a very beautiful and adorable scene.
Banke Bihari Temple is not just a place of worship, but it is the center of faith, love and devotion of crores of devotees. Every devotee who comes here experiences the supernatural beauty and divine appearance of Lord Banke Bihari. This temple is an important part of the spiritual and cultural heritage of Vrindavan.
