New Delhi, 6 November (IANS). Winter season is about to knock. If you do not adapt yourself to the weather, there is a strong possibility that you may fall prey to diseases. Especially, the concern of people living in cities like Delhi-NCR goes deeper, because this area is considered very sensitive in terms of pollution.

Apart from the smoke coming from people’s private vehicles, the stubble burnt by the farmers of Haryana and Punjab also makes the pollution worse, which has a harmful effect on the health of the people here. Their life also becomes difficult.

In this regard, IANS had a detailed conversation with Dr. Mayank Saxena, Additional Director, Department of Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital. He told how people can be cautious in view of the combined effect of pollution and cold.

He said, “It is generally seen that with the arrival of the month of November-December, the level of pollution in Delhi increases. There are basically two reasons behind this. First is natural cause and second is man-made cause. In this season the environment is not clean due to lack of wind. Because of this, the level of pollution remains higher in this season compared to other seasons.”

“Man-made causes include bursting of firecrackers, burning of stubble and smoke generated from private vehicles,” he said. Due to pollution, many types of health problems are seen in people. Especially, widespread problems are seen in respiratory patients. Respiratory patients may have trouble breathing. Sometimes the condition of the patients becomes such that they have to be admitted to the hospital and sometimes it has been seen that they have to be admitted to the ICU as well.”

“Children and the elderly are more affected in this season,” he said.

He said, “To avoid these diseases, people should reduce pollution at the personal level. If we can reduce the pollution generated by vehicles, it will be much better. You should try to use private vehicles less and give more importance to public vehicles. Keep getting your car pollution checked. Do not use things that smoke inside your house. Apart from this, use mask and air purifier. This will keep the surrounding air clean. Apart from this, if you notice any symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.”
