Preparation to fix the rate of cinema tickets.
Under a major step to make cinema more economical for the public, the Karnataka government has proposed amendment in the Karnataka Cinema (Regulation) Rules, 2014, under which the maximum price of cinema tickets including entertainment tax will be fixed at 200 per show. This price limit will apply to all theaters, multiplexes and films of all languages in the state. The draft notification issued by the Home Department under Karnataka Cinema (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025 was issued on July 15 and is open for public feedback for 15 days from the date of publication. Suggestions and objections can be presented to the Additional Chief Secretary, Vidhan Saudha, Home Department.
Why is the decision being taken?
Discussion has been going on for controlling ticket prices for many years, but Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reiterated this commitment in the budget of 2025-26 and clearly stated the limit of ₹ 200. The move is aimed at, especially in urban multiplexes, curbing excessive ticket prices and ensuring equal access to cinema for all sections of society.

This is not the first time that the Congress -led government has noticed ticket prices. In the budget of 2017-18, the previous government also proposed a uniform ticket rates and a government order was issued on 11 May 2018. However, it was withdrawn after the court stop.
Additionally, in this year’s budget, the Chief Minister announced a plan to develop a multiplex movie theater complex on a 2.5 -acre plot owned by Karnataka Film Academy at Nandini Layout, Bengaluru, through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. To promote Kannada cinema, the state has also announced the launch of an official OTT platform in the budget.
