It is said that when Lord Vishnu disturbed Vrinda’s sativa with deceit, Jalandhar was weakened and killed. Today Jalandhar city is a major industrial center of Punjab.
2. Gaya:
A famous city of Bihar, Gaya, is an important pilgrimage center in Hinduism. The city is associated with a powerful Asura named ‘Gaiasura’. It is said that Gaiasur had gained so much power from his penance that he had the ability to sanctify both heaven and earth. The gods frightened this and prayed to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu stabilized Gaiasura by placing his feet on his body, after which this place became known as ‘Gaya’. Even today, Gaya Pindadan and Shraddha are an important place for deeds.
3. Palwal:
The city of Palwal of Haryana was called Palabapur in ancient times. It was named after Rakshasa Palambasura. Legend has it that Lambhasura used to panic in this region and harass people. Lord Krishna’s elder brother, Balarama, killed Lambhasura and liberated people from his atrocities. The place was named Palwal after the same demon, which is today known as a developed city.
4. Tiruchirappalli:
Tiruchirappalli is a major city in Tamil Nadu. The city of Tiruchirappalli is named after the demon Thirisiran. Thirisiran Asura did severe penance to Lord Shiva. It is believed that there was so much power in his devotion that Lord Shiva gave him a boon by giving him darshan. At that time it was called Thiri-Sikhapuram, which later became Tiruchirappalli. The city is today a cultural and educational center of Tamil Nadu. The city is famous for its ancient temples and historical significance today.
5. Mysore
The city of Mysore is named after the demon Mahishasura. According to mythological belief, Mahishasura was a very powerful demon who had troubled the gods very much. Then Goddess Chamundeshwari killed her and the same place came to be called the city of Mahisha-Uru i.e. Mahishasura. Later, the same name changed to Mysore. In 2014 it was officially named Massuru.
