The process of issuing Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas will start news in hindi
Mumbai. Today, Tuesday, 31 October, Maharashtra Cabinet meeting was held. During this time, the Cabinet accepted the interim report of Justice Sandeep Shinde Committee on giving reservation to Maratha community. It was decided in the meeting that the process of issuing Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas will start. Also, it was decided that the Backward Classes Commission would collect new data to assess the social and educational status of the Maratha community.
Earlier, amid incidents of violence in some parts of Maharashtra over the issue of Maratha reservation, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had spoken to social activist Manoj Jarange on phone on Tuesday. During the state cabinet meeting to be held today, an assurance was given to take a concrete decision on granting Kunbi caste certificate to the Maratha community.
Jarange is on hunger strike since October 25
Jarange is on an indefinite fast in his native Antarwali Sarati village of Jalna district since October 25 demanding reservation for the Maratha community. According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Jarange has started drinking water during his protest after a satisfactory conversation with Chief Minister Shinde.
Members of the Maratha community are protesting in different parts of the state demanding reservation in government jobs and education under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category. At some places the agitators vandalized and set fire to the residences of some leaders. Curfew has also been imposed in Dharashiv district of Maharashtra after the incidents of violence.
According to the CMO’s statement, Chief Minister Shinde called Jarange on Tuesday morning and inquired about his well-being. It said that Shinde assured Jarange that he will take a concrete decision regarding granting Kunbi caste certificate to the Maratha community in the cabinet meeting to be held today. Shinde also told Jarange that the state government is ready to file a curative petition in the Supreme Court on the Maratha reservation issue.
Was canceled in the year 2021
In May 2021, the Supreme Court had struck down Maharashtra’s Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act, 2018, which provided reservation to the Maratha community, for violating the 50 percent reservation limit. The Maratha community, under the leadership of Jarange, is demanding issuance of Kunbi caste certificates to its members so that they can join the OBC category for reservation. Kunbi, an agricultural community, is classified under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category in Maharashtra and enjoys reservation in education and government jobs.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday demanded the Center to resolve the issue of Maratha reservation by calling a special session of Parliament. He said that all the Union Ministers of Maharashtra should raise the issue of reservation in the cabinet meeting. He also requested the Union Ministers to resign if the demands of the Maratha community are not met.
Maharashtra opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Tuesday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of taking a wrong decision and giving false assurances to the community. Wadettiwar said, ‘This is a fire lit by the BJP and the state has become unstable due to the government’s wrong decisions and its false assurances. The Congress leader said, we have requested the Governor to call a special session of the state assembly for three to five days to find a solution to this issue.
Nationalist Congress Party leader Anil Deshmukh said in a post on X that the issue of Maratha reservation is becoming complex day by day. The government had promised to find a solution in 30 days, but could not complete it. At the same time, members of the entire Maratha community have gone on a serial hunger strike in the Gandhi Gate area of the palace in Nagpur, expressing solidarity with the demand for reservation.
