What was the story of Shah Bano?
In 1978, 62 -year -old Shahbano, a mother of five children, was divorced by her lawyer husband Mohammad Ahmed Khan. When he sought alimony under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code, he refused to give alimony citing Muslim personal law. The matter reached the Supreme Court and in 1985 the court ruled that Section 125 applies to all Indian citizens and divorced women should get alimony, no matter what their religion is. This decision was historic, which strengthened the principles of gender justice and secular constitution.
