The world’s largest container ship ‘MSC Irina’ reached the Vizhinjam international port located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Monday morning, which will stand here till Tuesday. It is the world’s largest container ship based on 24,346 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) capacity. Its arrival here is also an important milestone for this port, which was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 May.

Launched in March 2023

MSc Irina has a length of 399.9 meters and width is 61.3 meters, which is about four times longer than a standard football ground designated by FIFA. The ship is specifically designed for large -scale container transport between Asia and Europe, which will lead to significant increase in trade routes and logistics efficiency.

‘MSc Irina’ was launched in March 2023 and its first visit began in April the same year. It moves under the Liberian flag and can stack container up to 26 levels, which makes it unique in terms of container capacity. The ship has surpassed its predecessor OOCL Spain by a margin of 150 teu.

Arrived at a South Asian port for the first time

Explain that this ship is coming to a South Asian port for the first time, which will highlight the capabilities of Vizhinjam in handling the ultra-loader vessels (ULCV). Developed and operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Limited, this port has recently welcomed other prestigious category ships including MSc Turkas and MSc Michelle Capelini, which further strengthened its reputation as a major center in maritime trade.
