There is no greater happiness than serving the needy, says Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who will retire on 10 November 2024.
Friday, November 8, was his last working day in the Supreme Court, a ceremonial bench sat for his farewell and a farewell ceremony was held in the evening.
On this occasion he shared many thoughts and experiences.
There are reports that… She said, ‘My mother told me in my childhood that I have named you Dhananjay, but the ‘wealth’ of your ‘Dhananjay’ is not material wealth, I want you to acquire knowledge.
While narrating an anecdote related to his father, he said that – My father bought a small flat in Pune, I asked him – Why are you buying a flat in Pune? When will we go to live there??
On this he told me that- I know that I am never going to live there, I do not know how long I will stay with you, but keep this flat till you complete your service as Justice. .
When I asked him- why so?
So he said – If you ever feel that your morals or intellectual integrity are being compromised, I want you to know that you have a roof over your head, if you ever think about compromising your principles while being a lawyer or a judge. Don’t pretend you don’t have your own home.
He also said that- I am asked from where do I get inspiration? I get this inspiration from this court, because there is not a single day when you do not feel that you have learned something new or do not get an opportunity to serve the society, there is no greater happiness than serving the needy, Those you will never meet, those you may not even know, whose lives you can impact even without meeting.
If reports are to be believed… Among the current judges of the Supreme Court, CJI DY Chandrachud has written the most judgments, on the last day he heard 45 cases.
Justice DY Chandrachud was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court as a sitting judge on May 13, 2016. During his tenure, he was a part of 1274 benches and wrote a total of 612 judgments.
