This Bollywood star considers herself to be Half South Indian, the reason told the film before its release
Jahnavi Kapoor
Jahnavi Kapoor’s upcoming film ‘Param Sundari’ is already in discussion before its release, but this time the reason is not the story of the film, but the character of Janhvi and the character played by her. In the film, Jahnavi Kapoor is playing the role of a woman who is associated with Malayali background. But since the trailer release, he has been facing a lot of criticism on social media, especially about his pronunciation, costumes and cultural authenticity of the character.
Actress spoke openly about trolls
In an interview to Et Digital recently, Jahnavi clarified on the background of his character without directly commenting on these criticisms. He told that his character in ‘Param Sundari’ is half Tamil and half Malayali. Jahnavi clearly said that neither he nor his late mother, actress Sridevi, is from Kerala. However, she also added that she has been a fan of South Indian cultures for a long time, and especially Malayalam cinema has always impressed her. This film gave him an opportunity to understand the culture closely and sink himself in it, for which he is grateful.
Trolling was done about Malayali Accent
But criticisms on social media are not taking the name of stopping. In the trailer and promo of the film, Janhvi’s Malayali pronunciation and style were called unnatural and stereotypeical by many audiences. The debate got further wind when Malayalam singer Pavitra Menon shared a video on Instagram in which she questioned Janhvi’s performance and Malayali identity. Pavitra also alleged that the character reflects an entire culture superficially. However, his video was soon removed from Instagram. Pavitra claimed that it happened due to a copyright complaint of a third party. He shared a screenshot of removing the video and wrote in a satirical manner with it, best wishes to all the voices of Independence Day. This comment not only indicates trolling but also indicates how critical voices are being suppressed. Param Sundari is directed by Tushar Jalota and produced by Dinesh Vijan under the banner of Madock Films. The film also stars Siddharth Malhotra in the lead role along with Jahnavi Kapoor. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on August 29, and before that the film has become a topic of debate and discussion at many levels. It will now be seen how the audience sees the film in theaters, will it be a new cultural glimpse or the expansion of the same stereotype which is being criticized.
