Let us tell you today about the story of Mangal Pandey’s revolution and the sacrifice of Ishwari Prasad.

Mangal Pandey was born in a Brahmin family

Mangal Pandey was born on 19 July 1827 in a Brahmin family in Nagwa village of Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. In 1849, he became a soldier in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry of the British East India Company. At that time, the British had reserved their rule in India, but their oppression and policies were getting angry among the Indian soldiers. In 1857, the British introduced a new Enfield rifle, with rumors of cow and pig fat on the cartridges. It was a religious insult to Hindu and Muslim soldiers, as the cartridge had to be cut off from the mouth.

Mangal attacked British officers

Mangal Pandey did not tolerate this insult and rebelled openly in Barrackpore, West Bengal on 29 March 1857. He instigated his fellow soldiers to take up arms against the British in a filled parade. It is said that Mangal Pandey attacked the British officers at the parade ground with his loaded muscat in a state of intoxication. He fired at the lieutenant body, which his horse hit and he fell to the ground. Mangal Pandey then attacked the body with a sword and injured her. Sergeant-Major Hussan also became a victim of his sword.

Sheikh Palatu tried to stop Mars

A soldier Sheikh Palatu tried to stop Mars, but the rest of the soldiers did not support him. When General Hiersie reached the spot with his sons, Mangal Pandey tried to shoot himself by placing his gun on his chest, but he did not die. He was then arrested. On 6 April 1857, in the court martial, Mangal Pandey clearly said that he made this rebellion on his own and no other was involved in it. He was hanged on 8 April 1857. His martyrdom provoked the fire of rebellion across the country, later known as the 1857 revolution.

Ishwari Prasad did not accept the order of the officer

Talking about Ishwari Prasad, he was Jamadar (Junior Commissioned Officer) in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry. He was a loyal soldier, but his loyalty was also staggering from the policies of the British. When Mangal Pandey rebelled on 29 March 1857, Surgent Major Hussan ordered Ishwari Prasad to arrest him. However, Ishwari Prasad replied that he could not catch Mars alone, as the rest of his soldiers were not present there. This refusal passed to the British, because he felt that Ishwari Prasad deliberately supported Mars.

Testify and hanging of Sikh soldiers

This decision of Ishwari Prasad was clearly showing his loyalty and anger between the soldiers. 3 Sikh soldiers testified that Ishwari Prasad had ordered the quarter guard not to arrest Mangal. On the basis of this testimony, the British also convicted Ishwari Prasad and hanged them on 21 April 1857. Ishwari Prasad’s sentence instigated more anger among the soldiers. The British dissolved the entire 34th regiment on 6 May 1857, as they believed that the soldiers showed failure to stop Mangal Pandey.

What is Mangal Pandey’s legacy?

Mangal Pandey’s bravery gave birth to the revolution of 1857, which is called India’s first freedom struggle. His martyrdom awakened the spirit of freedom among the soldiers and common people. Mangal Pandey’s move not only sorted the spark of rebellion in Barrackpore, but also in North India. On 10 May 1857 in Meerut, the soldiers killed their British officers and traveled towards Delhi.
