Thoughts on resumption of border trade between India and China, closed since 2020
Bilateral talks have begun to resume border trade between India and China amidst a tariff dispute with the US. Closing this trade for five years can now restore again, which is seen as an important initiative in the process of reducing tension between the two countries. According to the news, the discussion is still going on at the initial and confidential level. Both countries have proposed to start trade through limited border trade routes. Reacting to this, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Beijing is ready to increase dialogue and cooperation with India on this issue. The ministry also said that the border trade has played an important role in improving the lives of the residents of the border areas of both countries over the years.
Limited trade lasted for three decades
There has been a limited border trade between India and China for three decades, which contained local things such as spices, carpets, wood furniture, medicinal plants, earthen utensils, animals, wool and electronic goods. This trade was done with three fixed points on the 3,488 km long disputed Himalayan border. According to government data, the total value of this trade in 2017–18 was around $ 3.16 million. Even though its scale was small, it proved useful for the local economy.
Kovid and Galwan have stopped since the incident
The border trade between the two countries was closed during the Kovid-19 epidemic. In this period, violent clashes in the Galwan Valley worsened the situation. The incident, which took place in 2020, killed 20 Indian soldiers, while at least 4 soldiers from China were killed. After this, there was serious tension in the relationship between the two countries.
Softening is visible in relationships
In recent months, both sides have taken several diplomatic steps to reduce stress. According to a report, the direct flight operation between India and China may also start soon. At the same time, China has relaxed some restrictions on fertilizer exports to India, which is a sign of improvement in relations. This initiative is taking place at a time when business relations between India and America are stressful. US President Donald Trump has imposed a fee of up to 50% on products exported from India, which is much higher than other Asian countries.
