Kolkata: Unknown miscreants shot dead a TMC (Trinamool Congress) leader in the Jagatdal area in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Ashok Shaw, the former president of Jagatdal Ward No. 12.
During the incident, the miscreants also threw a bomb at him, injuring people nearby. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene and immediately took the injured to the hospital. Shaw’s body was taken into custody and sent for a post-mortem.
Miscreants shoot and bomb
Sharing details about the incident, a senior police officer of North 24 Parganas district said that the miscreants shot Shaw while he was standing in front of a tea stall located about 100 metres from the Jagatdal police station. They also threw a bomb at him. During the bombing, other people standing around Shaw were injured. As soon as the information was received, the police team reached the spot and transported Shaw and the other injured individuals to Bhatpara Government Hospital.
Doctors at Bhatpara Government Hospital declared Ashok Shaw dead, while the other injured were admitted and treated. The police officer said that the matter is under investigation. Some additional people were also injured in the bombing and are receiving treatment at the government hospital. Upon receiving information about the incident, Barrackpore Police Commissioner Alok Rajoria arrived at the scene with a heavy police presence and began an investigation.
No political link found

So far, no political connection has been found in the investigation of this murder. After the murder, locals protested outside the Jagatdal police station and demanded action against the accused.
Locals said that Shaw had been the president of the Trinamool Congress in Ward No. 12 in 2019 and was still an active grassroots worker for the TMC. He was travelling by auto on Wednesday morning when some youths riding a bike approached from behind near a tea shop and shot at him on Palghat Road. Locals ran towards the scene after hearing the sound of gunshots, but by then, the miscreants had fled.
