Trinidad and Tobago full support of India’s permanent membership in UNSC, pressure will increase on the institution

port of Spain: This Caribbean country has openly supported India’s permanent membership in the United Nations during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historical bilateral visit to Trinidad and Tobago. At the same time, India has also pledged to support the candidature of the temporary seats of Trinidad and Tobago in the UN for 2027-29. The focus to both countries is about increasing the number of permanent and temporary members of the United Nations and other necessary reforms. Earlier, all other countries have also supported India’s permanent membership. In such a situation, the pressure on the global institution will increase further.

Friendship deepened in Indo-Tinidad

The friendship of India and Trinidad and Tobago has deepened PM Modi’s visit. During this period, six important agreements were signed between the two countries to increase cooperation in various fields such as infrastructure, medicine, agriculture, healthcare, digital change, integrated payment system (UPI), capacity building and contact between people. This is the first bilateral visit of an Indian Prime Minister after 1999 in this Caribbean country. Prime Minister Modi reached Port of Spain on Thursday in the second phase of his five -country visit.

Mutual support in the United Nations

A joint statement released on Saturday said that Trinidad and Tobago have reiterated full support of India’s permanent membership claim in the United Nations Security Council. Additionally, India has assured to support the candidature of the temporary seat of Trinidad for 2027–28, while Trinidad has agreed to support India’s claim for a period of 2028–29. The two leaders emphasized the need for reforms in the United Nations so that this institution could better reflect the current global realities. He described dialogue and diplomacy between geopolitical tensions and global conflicts.

Trinidad with India against terror

The delegation level talks between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kamla Prasad Bisacer were described as “historic”. Bisacer said that the journey will further deepen the bilateral relations of both countries. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi appreciated the support of Trinidad and Tobago towards India on the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the two leaders reiterated the commitment to fight against terrorism.

PM Modi addressed Trinidad’s Parliament

During his visit, PM Modi addressed the Parliament of Trinidad. He discussed cultural, historical and sports world especially in cricket between the two countries. The Prime Minister said that Indians are also among the biggest fans of the West Indies cricket team unless they are playing against India. He underlined the contribution of people of Indian origin in the development of Trinidad, saying, “People of Indian origin from politics to commerce, cricket to commerce, calipso to chutney are contributing to every field. They are part of the vibrant diversity of this country, which you are proudly cherished.” (Language)
