Trump administration is reviewing 5.5 crore foreign visas, cancellation can happen anytime

The US State Department on Thursday said that the visa status of more than 5.5 crore foreign nationals holding a valid visa in the country is constantly being monitored by President Donald Trump’s government. According to the news of Livemint, a State Department official said that the department’s review process currently included all foreigners with valid American visas. The decision to cancel the visa is taken in cases where possible disqualification indicates. These include staying over the visa period in the US, committing crime, threatening public safety, involvement or supporting terrorism -related activities.

Are they under investigation?

Although this official of the State Department did not clarify whether all 5.5 crore visa holders are under active investigation or not, he said that the Trump administration prioritizes regular inquiry of all visa holders. The government is particularly emphasizing on review of visas of foreign students. “We are all reviewing the student visa,” the official said. Along with this, it has also been made mandatory to inform the visa applicants about their social media activities.

Strict attitude on foreign policy opponents

External Affairs Minister Marco Rubio, who took over with President Trump in January, targeted those who participated in anti -Israel protests. Rubio has initiated action to cancel the visa of those persons who are against the US foreign policy, resorting to a less known law. According to the State Department, 6,000 visas have been canceled since January, which is four times higher than the number of student visas canceled in the same period as the President of Biden. Rubio said that the administration has full right to issue and cancel visa, which does not require judicial review.

Shocks from courts

According to the news, the administration has also suffered a setback from the courts in some high-profile cases. Mahmud Khalil, who is a legal permanent resident in the US and was a leader of pro -Palestine demonstrations at Columbia University, was released by a judge in June. Rumeisa Ojaturk, a Turkish graduate student of Tufts University, who wrote an article against Israel in the campus newspaper, was released till the hearing in May.
