Why action was taken on the player?
France arrested the player at the US request and later detained him, his name is Danil Kasatakin. He is accused of being a member of a ransomware gang. France said Russian basketball player Danil Qasatakin has been detained at the US request. Kasatakin plays a point guard for Russia’s national team, arrested on June 21 at Charl De Gaul Airport when he arrived in France with his fiancée. In a hearing held on Wednesday, a judge ruled that he would be detained till extradition proceedings.
What is the charge of America?
US officials allege that Kasatakin studied in the US. During that time he played a role in fixing the ransom amount from a hacker gang. The gang has targeted around 900 companies and two federal institutions between 2020 and 2022. However, Kasatakin has denied any crime. His lawyer Frederick Belot told reporters that Kasatakin’s “computer information is very low” and the old computer he had bought was either already hacked or a hacker sold him by someone else’s name.
Club took out the player after custody
A few days after this news, Moscow -based MBA Club announced that Kasatakin is no longer part of the team. He played 172 matches for the club and won two bronze medals at the Russian National Championship. There have been cases of arrest of many Russian personalities in recent years. In August 2024, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was detained in France. He was accused of not preventing criminals from misusing his platform. He was later released on bail of 5 million euros (about $ 5.46 million). Durov claimed that French authorities pressured him to implement more sensorship on Telegram.
