Washington: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday invited Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir for a lunch meeting at the White House and said that the purpose of the meeting was to thank him for “not involved in war”. The meeting took place when tension between Iran and Israel is growing rapidly and Trump is considering the possible role of America.
What did Trump say about Aseem Munir?
When Trump was asked if Iran was also discussed with Munir in the meeting, he said: “He (Munir) knows a lot about Iran, maybe more than others. They are not happy with the situation. It’s not that he is against Israel, he knows both, but perhaps Iran knows more closely and he agreed to me.”
Trump’s statement on Indo-Pak war
Trump also said that “two very intelligent leaders” from India and Pakistan decided that the war would not be carried forward, which could have turned into a nuclear confrontation. This time Trump did not claim for the first time that the credit for stopping the war goes to him.
Operation Sindoor and Trump’s silence
This is the first time Trump has not described himself as a peace messenger after the operation vermilion launched by India after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April and then on May 10. Earlier he has been claiming that he reduced the tension between India and Pakistan and told both of them that if they stop the war, America will increase business with them.
PM Modi rejected third party mediation
A day before this lunch meeting, Trump and PM Modi met during the G7 summit, but Trump had already returned to Washington. However, before returning from Canada’s Kananaskis, PM Modi interacted with Trump on a 35 -minute phone. Foreign Secretary Vikram Egypti said that PM Modi clearly stated that there was no talk of trade or arbitration from the US at any level during Operation Sindoor. He said that direct talks on stopping military action between India and Pakistan took place through the current dialogue channel of the armies of the two countries, and it was initiated by Islamabad. PM Modi bluntly said that India will never accept the mediation of a third party, and India has full political consent on this issue.
