United Nations apex court pronounced historic decision on dealing with climate change

The Hague: The United Nations apex court on Wednesday said in a historic decision on dealing with climate change that “clean, healthy and sustainable environment” is a human rights. The court has ruled in a historic case related to the obligations of nations on climate change and the results faced by them. This non-inflammatory consultation of about 500 pages is being seen as a possible turn in the International Climate law.
Decision can be decided by legal actions
This decision of the UN apex court can become the basis of other legal actions including legal measures such as domestic cases and investment agreements. Court President Yaji Evasawa said, “The right to clean, healthy and sustainable environment is inherent in other human rights.” The United Nations top court said that failure to protect the planet from the impacts of climate change could be a violation of international law.
The court room was full of packed
The trial is being led by the Pacific island country Vanuatu as well as the support of more than 130 countries. All the UN member countries, including major greenhouse gas emitter countries like the United States and China, are parties in this court. Climate workers also gathered outside the court. The court room to hear the verdict, called the ‘Great Hall of Justice’, was packed. After years of lobbying of the island countries for fear of disappearing due to rising sea water level, the United Nations General Assembly sought a consultation from the International Court of International Court in 2023, which could become an important basis of international obligations.
