White House on Gautam Adani: The relationship between the United States and India remains steady, even as allegations against Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, have sparked global attention. The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York recently accused Adani and his team of promising over $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar energy contracts. While the charges have led to significant economic ripples, the White House has highlighted the resilience of the US-India partnership.

White House Addresses the Adani Bribery Case

During a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to questions about the Gautam Adani bribery allegations. She acknowledged the seriousness of the charges but redirected specifics to agencies like the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

“We are aware of these allegations,” Jean-Pierre stated. “What I will say is, on the US and India relationship, we believe that it stands on an extremely strong foundation, anchored in ties between our people and cooperation across a full range of global issues.”

She reassured that the partnership would endure any challenges, including the Gautam Adani case. “We’re confident that we’ll continue to navigate this issue, as we have with others in the past,” she added, downplaying the potential fallout from the bribery scandal.

Allegations Against the Adani Group

The allegations paint a troubling picture. US prosecutors claim that between 2020 and 2024, the Adani Group promised over $265 million in bribes to Indian officials to secure lucrative solar energy contracts. The indictment accuses the group of lying to secure over $3 billion in loans and bonds, violating the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Lisa H. Miller stated, “This indictment alleges schemes to pay over $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials, lie to investors and banks, and obstruct justice.”

Reports suggest that Gautam Adani personally met with a government official to push the bribery agenda. Additionally, Gautam Adani, along with his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, allegedly provided false information to international financiers to secure investments.

Adani Group Denies Allegations Amid Market Plunge

In response, the Adani Group has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “baseless.” However, the charges have had a profound impact on the company’s valuation. Adani Group shares plunged by over 20% on Thursday, wiping out more than ₹2 lakh crore from its market capitalization.

India-US Relations: Built on a Strong Foundation

Despite the scandal, the White House has reaffirmed the strength of US-India ties. The partnership, rooted in shared democratic values and strategic cooperation, remains a cornerstone of global diplomacy. The White House’s measured response indicates a focus on preserving bilateral relations while addressing legal matters through appropriate channels.

Jean-Pierre stressed the broader context of US-India relations, saying, “What we believe, and we’re confident about, is that our relationship will continue to thrive, regardless of individual challenges.”
