US Indo Pacific Deputy Commander suddenly arrives in Nepal
Kathmandu, 08 November (HS). The Deputy Commander of the US Indo Pacific Military Command suddenly arrived in Kathmandu on Friday amid discussions on the implementation of China’s Belt and Road (BRI) agreement in Nepal. America’s Millennium Challenge Compact project in Nepal is under the Indo Pacific Strategy. In such a situation, the arrival of the American military team to Nepal is considered very important.
Joshua M Rood, Deputy Commander of the Indo Pacific Military Command, arrived in Kathmandu in the afternoon today along with a four-member military delegation. Lieutenant General Rood, who arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport in a special aircraft of the US Army, was welcomed by the officials of the US Embassy in Kathmandu. This visit was kept confidential till the last moment.
Nepal’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Amrit Rai said that the ministry did not have any official information regarding the visit of the US military delegation to Nepal. However, the Nepali Army has described it as a formal visit. Nepalese Army spokesperson Brigadier General Gaurav KC said that the US Indo Pacific Military Commander’s arrival in Nepal took place at the invitation of the Nepalese Army. However, he did not answer that when he had come on the invitation of Nepali Army, then why was no official of Nepali Army present at the airport to welcome him?
Neither the US Embassy nor the Nepalese Army has so far provided any information regarding the visit program and meetings of the US Deputy Commander. It is believed that the Indo Pacific Commander is visiting Nepal in view of the possibility of signing the implementation agreement of BRI during the proposed visit of Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to China in December. Security experts say that America would never want the country which is taking advantage of its project under the Indo Pacific Strategy to come under China’s BRI.
