Uttarakhand Cabinet approves Religion Freedom (Amendment) Bill 2025, read news

The Cabinet of Pushkar Singh Dhami Government of Uttarakhand has approved the Uttarakhand Religion Freedom (Amendment) Bill 2025, under which strict punishment on illegal conversion, strong provisions of digital propaganda and strong provisions of conservation of victims have been added. Under this, a detailed definition of temptation has also been described, under which gifts, cash/goods gains, employment, free education, promise of marriage, hurting religious faith or glorification of other religion are all included in the category of crime.
There is a provision for punishment on violation of rules
Under this law, promoting or provoking social media, messaging app or any online medium will be considered a punishable offense. There is a provision of 3–10 years punishment for normal violation of this law. Apart from this, there is a provision of punishment of 5 to 14 years in cases related to sensitive class, punishment up to 20 years in serious cases and heavy fine. At the same time, a provision of strict punishment has been made even after getting married by hiding religion. Apart from this, arrangements for the rights, protection, rehabilitation, medical, travel and maintenance expenditure of the victim have also been made under this law.
What did the state government say?
The state government approved the bill, saying that this law will prevent the religious rights of citizens, prohibit the conversion caused by fraud, temptation or pressure and maintain social harmony. In fact, Pushkar Singh Dhami Sarkar of Uttarakhand held a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. A total of 26 proposals were presented during this meeting. The most important proposal in this was amendment to the anti -conversion law. A total of 16 important decisions were taken at the cabinet meeting. In this episode, a decision has also been taken on the conversion law, after which the conversion law has become even more strict.
