Vehicle Sales: Brake on the sale of cars in May, so much decline
Domestic sales of passenger cars in the country in May this year declined 12.2 percent to 93,951 units against the 1,06,952 units of the same period last year. According to the data released by the top organization SIAM of automobile companies, a total of 93,951 cars were sold in the domestic market in May 2025, which is 12.2 percent lower than 1,06,952 cars in May 2024. During this period, the export of cars increased by 17.7 percent and increased from 28,802 to 33,902 units.

In the period, sales of utility vehicles increased from 1,82,883 to 7.6 percent to 1,96,821 and van sales increased from 10,960 to 12.5 percent to 12,327 units. Thus, the total sales of passenger vehicles in this period increased by 3,00,795 to just 0.8 percent to 3,03,099 units. During this period, the total exports of passenger vehicles increased by 24.4 percent and increased from 53,991 to 67,181 units.
During this period, two -wheelers’ sales increased by 2.2 percent to 16,55,927 units compared to 16,20,084. Similarly, the total exports rose from 3,13,131 to 21.7 percent to 3,80,979 units. In this period, the sales of scooters increased from 5,40,866 to 7.1 percent to 5,79,507, the motorcycle increased from 10,38,824 to 10,39,156 units. At the same time, moped sales were reduced by 7.7 percent to 37,264 units against 40,394.
The total sales of three -wheeler vehicles declined by 3.3 percent during the period under review and fell from 55,763 units to 53,942 units. At the same time, the total exports rose 36.7 percent to 31,084 units compared to 22,740. During this period, the sales of the three-wheelers declined by 45,445 to 2.4 percent to 44,354, the cargo-triple vehicle 8,863 decreased to 1.6 percent to 8,720, the e-rickshaw fell from 1,203 to 40.1 percent to 720 to 720 and the sales of e-Cart fell from 252 to 41.3 percent to 148 units.
Thus in May 2025, a total of 20,12,969 vehicles of all categories were sold in the domestic market, which is just 1.8 percent higher than the 19,76,674 vehicles in May 2024. Also, the total exports reached 4,79,538 units with an increase of 3,90,518 to 22.8 percent.

Commenting on the performance of the automobile sector, SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said that all vehicle categories have performed stable in May 2025. ” He said that the passenger vehicle segment maintained a strong position with the sale of 3.45 lakh units, although it recorded a slight increase of 0.8 percent as compared to May 2024.
There was also a slight decline in sales of three -wheelers, which was 3.3 percent less than in May 2024 and 0.54 lakh units were sold in this section. In contrast, two -wheelers performed positively and a selling of 2.2 percent in May 2025 sold 16.56 lakh units.
Talking about further possibilities, Menon said, “The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has a three -time repo rate cut of 100 basis points in six months and the forecast of monsoon more than normal, both are positive indicators that can strengthen the auto sector in the coming months.
