A shocking and tragic incident has come to light from Ganjam district of Odisha, where her own family accepted her ‘dead’ when a girl married her choice and performed the symbolic funeral. This incident is from Balliapalli village of Kavisurynagar police station area of Ganjam district. The daughter of Niranjan Gaur, a resident of the village, married a young man from another caste. This caused heavy resentment in the girl’s family and society. What happened after this surprised everyone.
Banana tree was made a ‘dead body’ as a symbol of daughter
Just as the family cremated on the death of someone, similarly a banana tree was considered as a symbol of daughter and made a ‘dead body’. She wore a new saree, decorated like a dead body and turned the entire village. The people of the village, while playing the bell and mridang, take out the journey of false dead bodies while speaking “Ram Naam Satya Hai”. Subsequently, a symbolic cremation of the banana tree was taken to the crematorium of the village.

The video of this entire ‘drama’ is now becoming increasingly viral on social media. People are strongly criticizing this inhuman and casteist thinking.
The mentality behind this incident is the same old thinking in which marrying out of caste is considered a sin. When a youth breaks this tradition, many times the anger of the whole family and society is broken against him. In many communities, in such cases, drama is composed in the name of ‘purification’ or ‘protecting the dignity of the family’, as the daughter is no longer in this world.
Is it right to punish the daughter such a big punishment?
The biggest question in this whole matter arises that marrying with your choice is such a big crime that parents should consider their own children dead? Parents who raise their daughter since childhood, teach, what is such a big punishment against the same daughter? Today, when the world has reached the moon and Mars, some parts of our society are still entangled in caste and false rites. A girl simply married her favorite boy, but was excluded from the society.
