Warning of heavy rain in Uttarkashi on Thursday, dozens of people still missing in Dharli
50 people are still missing in the disaster in Dharali village of Uttarkashi.
Uttarkashi: The natural disaster in 34 seconds in Dharali village of Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand has caused severe havoc. The Rudra Roop of the Kheer Ganga River has turned the village into a pile of debris. Where there were some four-five floor hotels, magnificent houses, home stays and tourists from tourists, now there is only mud and debris left. 10 people have been reported killed in this accident, while the army has recovered 3 bodies. About 50 people are still missing. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that 190 people have been taken to safe places. At the same time, there is a warning of heavy rains in many districts of Uttarakhand including Uttarkashi.
Kalpa Kedar Temple also suppressed in debris
This disaster, which came on Tuesday in Dharali, completely changed the picture of the village. The famous Kalpa Kedar temple, which is considered 1500 years old, also got buried in debris. The temple was also affected in the 1978 floods, but then Kheer Ganga changed the way, which survived the temple. This time the strong current of the river was shed the temple and the bridge connecting Dharali with Mukhwan. The ruins of only one house in the village are left, everything else has become frozen. The depth of the disaster can be gauged from the fact that two-three floor buildings have been buried in 30-40 feet deep debris and mud. It is very difficult to remove people trapped in debris, as it is like a swamp.
The entire emphasis was made to save people
The water that came at a high speed and the stones fell at a speed of 15 meters per second destroyed the village. Teams of Army, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF and BRO are engaged in relief work day and night. 225 army personnel, ITBP and NDRF teams are manually removing debris and saving people, as heavy machines and equipment have not reached Dharli due to poor roads and weather. ITBP spokesman Kamlesh Kamal said that due to the closure of the road, all the work has to be done by hand. However, the communication system has been restored. The army helipad in Harshil has been fixed in 14 hours, now relief materials and teams are reaching Dharli through helicopters.
Search and rescue dogs also deployed
Three private helicopters from Sahastradhara are helping relief work from the temporary helipad of Bhatwadi. However, heavy helicopters such as Chinook are currently on standby in Jollygrant, Chandigarh and Sarsawa, as it is not possible to fly them in bad weather. The teams of SDRF and NDRF have reached Dharli by walking 40 km on dangerous hill routes. Given the difficulty of walking in debris and mud, the way is being made by laying tin sheets. The team of Combat Engineers of the Army is also engaged in removing debris and making way. Search and rescue dogs have been deployed in Harshil.
Dhami’s helicopter landed after 4 times attempts
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Dharli on Wednesday. Due to bad weather, his helicopter could land in the afternoon after trying to land 4 times. Dhami conducted an aerial survey of the area affected by the helicopter and took to the ground and reviewed the relief work. He met the injured and encouraged them. Dhami said that debris and water came down 6 times on Tuesday, which has increased the challenges. Electricity, mobile tower and infrastructure have been completely destroyed. Dhami has decided to camp in Uttarkashi and is monitoring relief work on a war footing.
The roads reaching Dharali completely ruined
The roads reaching Dharali have been completely ruined. The road from Bhatwadi to Harshil is broken, and about 300 meters part was washed away in water. The bridge connecting Harshil has also been destroyed. BRO teams are removing debris with the help of JCB, but explosives are not being used due to the risk of landslide. Large rocks are being drilled and broken. It may take at least 24 hours to fix the roads.
Differences between experts over the cause of disaster
Experts have differences about the cause of disaster. Initial reports claimed that a flash flood came out due to cloudburst, but according to the Meteorological Department, Dharali received only 5-6 cm of rain. Some scientists believe that the disaster was caused by the breakdown of the lake at a height. He argues that water and debris at high speed 6 times are possible only when water and debris have been released from artificial lake due to landslide. At the same time, some scientists say that clouds were cracked around Dharli, due to which water and debris came again and again.
Damage increased due to illegal construction on the banks of river
DD Chuniyal, Professor of Nityananda Himalayan Research Center of Doon University, said on the basis of satellite image that the disaster has come from clouds, not from cloudburst, but due to other geographical reasons. Some experts consider it a man -made disaster. He says that the loss increased due to illegal construction on the banks of the river and stopping the road to the river. The floods in 1978 caused less destruction as there were not much population or hotels on the banks of the river. But later houses, shops and hotels were built on the way to the river, due to which this time the water adopted the old road and caused heavy havoc.
There is a warning of heavy rain in Uttarkashi
The Meteorological Department has today warned of heavy rains in many areas of Uttarakhand including Uttarkashi. If it rains, relief work can be more difficult. Today, all schools and Anganwadi centers from class 1 to 12 have been discharged in Uttarkashi. This tragedy of Dharali gives a lesson to keep pace with nature. There was also floods in 1978 and 2018, but then the loss due to low population and construction was reduced. This time hotels and houses built on the original way of the river became the cause of destruction. Experts say that it is necessary to maintain harmony with nature, otherwise such disasters can become a curse.
