Types of kawad yatra: As soon as the month of Sawan arrives, there is a different enthusiasm among Shiva devotees. The shouts of ‘Bol Bomb’ echo all around and there is an inundation of saffron clothing kawandis on the streets. This is the holy Kandar Yatra, which is a symbol of unwavering reverence for Lord Shiva. Devotees reach the holy sites by walking on foot to take Ganga water and anoint the Shivling with that water. But, do you know that the Kavad Yatra is not only one type, but also has many forms, each of which has its own special importance and difficulty level? Let’s know about the major types of Kavad Yatra.
1. General Kavad Yatra (Simple kanwar yatra) It is the most common and popular type of Kavad Yatra. In this, devotees walk on foot in their kavad with Ganga water. In this journey, devotees can stop at their convenience and rest. However, an important rule is that Kavad is not placed on the ground. When devotees rest, Kavad is hung at a high place, such as a tree or a stand, so that his sanctity remains. This journey is relatively less difficult and in it, devotees cover the distance according to their physical ability.
2. Dak Kanwar Yatra (Dak kanwar yatra) Dak Kavad Yatra is more difficult and challenging than normal kanvad. In this journey, devotees continue to walk without stopping. Once lifting the kanvad, the devotees do not stop until they reach their destination and perform Jalabhishek on the Shivling. In this journey, a group of Kanwari takes a pledge to complete its journey within a certain time frame. This journey demands excessive physical stamina and mental fortune, as it has to walk continuously, whether it is day or night.
3. Khadi Kavad Yatra (Khadi kanwar yatra) Khadi Kawad Yatra is another special type of journey, in which devotees walk with khadi kavad. A special type of balance has to be made in this kavad, and it has to be kept straight. In this journey, there is also a associate with Kawandia, who walks with them and helps to handle Kavad when needed, so that it does not fall. This journey is physically challenging, as Kavad has to be kept in the same position continuously.
4. Dandi Kanwar Yatra (Dandi Kanwar Yatra) Dandi Kavad Yatra is considered to be the most difficult type of Kavad Yatra. In this journey, devotees fulfill their journey by bowing to Dandavat. This means that devotees move forward by lying on the ground, then getting up, and then lying in the same place. This process is constantly repeated, causing the most time to travel and it demands excessive physical and mental penance. It takes several days or sometimes several weeks to complete this journey. Devotees choose this difficult path to fulfill their reverence and wish.

These different types of Kavad Yatra reflect the devotees’ immense reverence and dedication towards Lord Shiva. Each type of journey has its own importance and it is a medium to purify the devotees spiritually.
