Importance of Akshaya Tritiya in Jainism:

According to the belief of Jainism, Akshaya Tritiya has an important place in Jainism. It is mainly associated with Lord Rishabhnath/ Adinath. This day is considered important because it reminds of the day when Lord Rishabh Nath took food for the first time after a long fast of one year.

King Shreyansh Kumar of Hastinapur understood the need of Lord Rishabhnath due to the remembrance of his previous birth and offered him the juice of Ikshu Rasa/ Sugarcane. Lord Rishabh Nath, by making his hands eligible, took that juice and broke his long fast. Therefore, food donation and this day has special significance in Jainism. This day is still famous as ‘Akshaya Tritiya’. Even today, Jain religious leaders in Hastinapur break their fast by drinking sugarcane juice on this day.

And thus, Rishabhnath gained complete knowledge of Kaivalya knowledge/ ghost, future and present by doing harsh penance for a thousand years and became Jinendra. After receiving perfection, he broke his silence fast and performed religion in the entire Arykhand for about 99 thousand years and told people to get rid of their duties and bondage of birth and death. Since this incident, Jainism is considered a very auspicious day of donating to Akshaya Tritiya in Jainism. Akshay means ‘never decaying’ and Tritiya means ‘third’. It falls on the third date of the Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. This day reminds everyone of the renunciation of Lord Rishabhnath and his harsh penance, which inspires the followers of Jainism to follow the path of renunciation, penance and restraint.
