What kind of changes did India make on the border, how many roads, tunnels and bridges were built?
Conversation with Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan.
The Government of India is constantly completing the development work on the borders of the country. Whether it is the border with Pakistan or LAC, Border Road Organization (BRO) has completed a rapid construction of roads, tunnels and bridges on a large scale on borders. BRO DG Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan has given detailed information in the conversation with India TV.
Question 1. What kind of change has occurred on the border, especially on the line of actual control (LAC)? How many roads, how many tunnels and how many bridges have been built so far?
Answer- There has been a decisive change in India’s border structure in the last decade. Now meditation is on ALL-Weedar Connectivity, which has made the most remote posts and villages accessible throughout the year. Alternative routes have been developed in many areas, such as Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, which gives Ladakh an additional connectivity. The earlier single-lane tracks have now been converted into double-lane roads and the bridge is now being built on Class 70R load specifications, so that heavy military equipment can also reach easily. Projects like Mago-Chuna Road in Arunachal Pradesh and Gunji-Kutti-Jolingkong Road in Uttarakhand are connecting border villages to the country’s mainstream and are promoting reverse migrations. Also, tunnels are being built to the border, which has reduced the time of travel and strengthens security. Now Helipads and Airfields are also being built there, where earlier it was also difficult to imagine. Overall, the boundaries have become more connected, safe and strategically stronger than ever before.
How has been completely changed?
Answer- In the last ten years, the budget of BRO has increased unprecedented. While the budget was ₹ 4,029 crore in 2014-15, it increased to ₹ 16,690 crore in 2024-25 and a plan of ₹ 18,700 crore for 2025-26. With this financial support, BRO completed 1,125 km of roads (roads) in 2024-25 and the target of this year is 1,500 km. The growing budget has provided new technology, high-performance machinery and modern tunneling and faster bridge-launching facilities. The process of preparing DPR (DPR) has accelerated and better use of technology has increased both work speed and quality. This is not just the amount, but the direct effect is visible-fast construction of strategic roads, construction of heavy-load bridges and timely completion of high-altitude tunnels in height areas. These reforms have given new heights to both Civilian Connectivity, India’s military preparations and civilian concentrities.
Question 3. How is BRO playing a decisive role in the lives of the army as well as the local people? What challenges do you face while working day and night and how are you helping people while crossing them?
Answer- BRO has completed historical projects in the most inaccessible and height areas of the country. The Atal Tunnel, 9.02 km of Himachal Pradesh is the longest highway tunnel in the world which is built above 10,000 feet and Manali-Leh reduces the journey by 4-5 hours. Arunachal’s Sela Tunnel, 13,000 ft now offers all-vegetarian access to Tawang. The DS-DBO road in Ladakh has ensured Supply Line to advance posts. Projects such as Shinkhun La Tunnel, 15,800 FT, Nyoma Airfield, Arunachal Frontier Highway and Projects are based on projects like Western Sikkim Highway. These have reduced the separation of the local public, promoted the economy and have been accessible emergency services. BRO personnel face challenges such as severe cold, snowfall, landslides and lack of oxygen, but despite all this, the organization has changed the lives of the army as well as the border villages.
Question 4. What difference will be seen from your actions in the coming time?
Answer- BRO has fully newed its working style and technical ability. EPC Model, New Machinery and Process Reforms have made it possible to have a fast project execution. Rejupave technology has also made it possible to make concrete in cold weather in high-altitude areas. Cut-and-Fit Technology, Pre-Cast Kalvarts and Interlock Blocks are making road construction faster and durable. The GRSE has a 95 Made-in-India modular bridges on the MOOU, out of which 42 have been launched. In Ladakh, DS-DBO roads are being built on two cut-and-covers tunnels to maintain movement in icy storms. In the coming years, roads, bridges, tunnels and airstrips will be expanded directly to the extent, which will give both the army and the citizen permanent, safe and connectivity.
Question 5. What are the major projects coming to Ladakh? What new preparations are being made in Arunachal Pradesh too?
Answer- Ladakh has always been an area where there has been a strong presence of BRO and it is still the primary focus of the organization. Projects such as Shinkhun La Tunnel, Nyoma Airfield and Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road are about to bring historical changes. The DS-DBO will also ensure that the Cut-And-Cover Tunnels on the road will also ensure that connectivity remains throughout the year. At the same time, projects like Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh have proved to be a big success, as it has provided safe and reliable contact to Tawang for the whole year. Later, projects such as Arunachal Frontier Highway will also be very important strategic and will play an important role in connecting the northeastern region to the mainstream of the country. In the coming years, these projects will permanently connect both Ladakh and Arunachal to the country.
