Onam is also a crop celebration, which symbolizes the end of the monsoon and the onset of the new crop. At this time, farmers express their gratitude to nature and gods for good yield.

mythology: Onam’s most popular and major mythological importance is associated with the Asura Raja Mahabali. According to the legend, Mahabali was a very kind and powerful king, under whose reign, there was happiness, prosperity and equality in Kerala. Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana i.e. a dwarf Brahmin and reached Mahabali to ask for three steps in donations. Mahabali pledged to donate without thinking. Vamana measured the entire earth in his first step and the whole sky in the second step. When there was no place for the third step, King Mahabali bowed his head in front of Vamana to fulfill his promise. Vamana placed his third foot on Mahabali’s head and sent him to Hades.

However, pleased with the king’s charity and commitment, Lord Vishnu gave him a boon that he could return to Earth to meet his subjects once a year. This day is celebrated as ‘Thiruvonam’. The people of Kerala prepare for the reception of their beloved king on this day, which ensures that King Mahabali looks prosperous and happy when he comes.
