Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi starrer film was the first film directed by Masoom Shekhar Kapoor. The film played special roles by Tanuja and Supriya Pathak and Urmila Matondkar and Jugal Hansraj worked as a child artist. Based on the 1980 Eric Sehgal novel ‘Man, Woman and Child’, the script, dialogue and song was written by Gulzar and the music was composed by RD Burman. The audience liked the film very much before its release, but no one came to theaters in the first week. In his recent post on Instagram, Shekhar remembered how the luck of him and his first film changed overnight. He also explained how black marketers called it a ‘Article’ film, and wrote the spelling of the word artistic.

Shekhar Kapoor recently shared a post about this film. In which Shekhar Kapoor told that the director of Mr. India wrote, “I went to the theater and there were only two people and I was me. The huge emptiness shook me like an avalanche. It was the end of my career as a filmmaker, which was not actually started, because innocent was my first film. Unfortunately, black marketers called it an article film. It was Friday of release. All theaters were empty. Like they used to be on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.
Shekhar Kapoor wanted to leave a career
Kapoor further explained that seeing the initial response to his first film, he thought of doing something else for Jeevika. However, when the distributors were thinking of removing the film from theaters, the situation changed for better. The filmmaker further wrote, ‘On Wednesday, the distributor of the film called me and said that he had no choice but to remove the film from theaters, and he lifted the film from theaters where he could get another film instead of innocent. On Thursday, I received his call that the audience started coming. The cinema hall was full on Friday. On Saturday, those who called Masoom to the film ‘Article’ sold in the ticket black. And the competition to find new cinema started and the innocent was declared a hit.
