History of Kannal: The Kannal is the ancient heritage of Haridwar. It was the capital of the kingdom of King Daksha. Kankhal is the oldest place in Haridwar. It is mentioned in the Puranas. The history of Kankhal is associated with Mahabharata and Lord Shiva. According to mythological beliefs, Kankhal is the place where King Daksha performed the famous yajna and Sati had buried herself in that yagna for her father insulting Lord Shiva. After the fire of Mata Sati, Shiva’s Gana Virbhadra killed King Daksha, later Shiva connected his torso to the head of Vashva. Dakshwar Madir remains here in memory of this incident.
