The height of this plant ranges from 3 to 4 feet. This plant has green fibers and smooth stems. Opium is stalkless and its leaves are long and similar to hibiscus leaves. The flowers of this crop are bowl-shaped in white and blue colour. The color of opium is black. Talking about taste, it seems very bitter.

Opium is not cultivated in all the states in India. For its cultivation, farmers first have to obtain a license from the Central Bureau of Narcotics. Licenses have been issued for opium cultivation in only three states, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. At present, opium is being cultivated in Mandsaur, Neemuch of Madhya Pradesh, Kota, Jhalawar, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara and Pratapgarh of Rajasthan and Lucknow and Barabanki of Uttar Pradesh. The farming area here has been fixed at 5 and a half thousand hectares. According to a report of Dainik Bhaskar, if we talk about the state, it is cultivated the most in Rajasthan and if we look at the district, it is cultivated the most in Pratapgarh.
