Customers face many problems in repairing smartphones and tablets. In such a situation, a committee constituted by the government has recommended that the original equipment manufacturers should announce the repair capacity index in this product category to get complete information about this. According to the suggestions of the committee, manufacturers will have to rating the equipment on this index. This will reveal how much the equipment is prone to repairing when it deteriorates.

An official statement said that the committee constituted for the repair capacity index in mobile and electronic sector has submitted its report to Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare. Khare had earlier said that the ministry would investigate the recommendations and issue some guidelines accordingly.

In September 2024, the Department of Consumer Affairs constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary Bharat Kheda.

The committee said that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) would have to announce the repair capacity index based on standard marks criteria without any additional compliance burden. In addition, the committee suggested that the repair capacity index should be shown as QR code on shops, e-commerce forums and products.
