Why is Kailash Mansarovar not a part of India? Know when and how separated from India?
Kailash Parvat Bharat Se Kab Alag Hua: The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has started again in the year 2025 from 30 June, which is proposed in the month of August. It is noteworthy that this journey has resumed after a long gap of six years, due to which special enthusiasm is being seen among the devotees. Kailash Mansarovar is considered as a very sacred pilgrimage site of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh communities. This journey is not only considered important from spiritual terms, but it is also counted in the world’s most difficult and challenging trips.
Kailash Mansarovar, located between India and Tibet, is not only a sacred pilgrimage center, but also a deep symbol of Indian culture and religious sentiments. Every year thousands of devotees leave for this pilgrimage even under difficult circumstances. But a question comes in the minds of people many times, why is such a holy place which is created in Indian civilization, texts and beliefs, is not a part of India? After all, when and how did Kailash Mansarovar separate from India? Let’s understand in detail.
Religious association
Kailash Parvat and Mansarovar Lake are considered to be very sacred along with Hindu religion as well as followers of Jain, Buddhist and Sikh religion. According to Hindu beliefs, Kailash mountain is the abode of Lord Shiva, while Mansarovar Lake is considered divine and salvation. In Jainism, it is considered to be the land of Chakravarti emperors and meditative practices in Rishabhdev’s Nirvana land and Buddhism. Despite all these religious associations, this site does not fall within the boundaries of India.
How did Kailash Mansarovar separate from India?
Will be able to look into history that Kailash Mansarovar was once part of Tibet, and Tibet used to be an independent country. But in 1950, China took military action on Tibet and gradually took it under its control. India then registered strict opposition to Tibet’s independence, but no concrete action could be taken due to China’s expansionist policies and India’s neutral foreign policy.
Panchsheel Agreement and India’s stance
In 1954, there was a “Panchsheel Agreement” between India and China, in which India first officially accepted Tibet as part of China. Under this, Kailash Mansarovar region, which was located in Tibet, went under the jurisdiction of China. Since then, this place has been out of India’s border, and Indian devotees have to travel for this with a visa from China.
Is there any claim of India now?
Politically and diplomatically, there is no active claim of India on the Kailash Mansarovar region. The region falls in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. However, many nationalist and cultural organizations have been demanding from time to time that India should talk on Kailash Mansarovar on the basis of historical and religious rights. But due to geopolitical equations and strict policies of China, it has become a complex case.
Today’s situation and India-China cooperation
Today, Indian devotees go on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through two main routes, Lipulekh Pass of Uttarakhand and Nathula Pass of Sikkim. The permission and operation of these routes is based on the mutual agreement of India-China. Before the journey, many formalities like China’s visa, medical fitness test, and registration have to be completed.
