Story behind Labor Day
Labor Day began at the end of the 19th century, when the exploitation of workers was at its peak during the Industrial Revolution. There was long working hours (12–16 hours), poor working conditions, low salary and no social security. Workers organized and raised their voice against this injustice. The most important historical basis of Labor Day is the MARATE murder case of 1886 in Chicago, USA. Workers were demanding 8 hours of working day. On 1 May 1886, thousands of workers started the strike. On 4 May, a bomb blast occurred during a peaceful rally at Mamket Square, Chicago, following violent clashes between police and protesters.
Many people were killed and injured in this heartbreaking incident. The incident further strengthened labor movements globally. In 1889, the second international (a global alliance of labor organizations) in Paris decided to celebrate May 1 as International Labor Day, so that the martyrs of the Hai Mamkets are remembered and promoted the struggle for the rights of the workers. Just from then on, the tradition of celebrating May 1 as Labor Day started all over the world.
