Tazia procession in Muharram: Muharram is the first month of the calendar of Islam. Muslims consider Muharram to be a sacred month and its 10th date, called Ashura, has special significance. According to the Islamic calendar, after the moon appeared on the evening of 26 June in India, the Pak month of Muharram started on 27th June and accordingly Muharram’s tenth day i.e. ‘Yumme-e-Ashura’ will be celebrated on 6 July 2025 this time on Sunday. Why do Muslim people celebrate Muharram: The main reason for celebrating Muharram in the religion of Islam is to remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali. Imam Hussain was the younger Nawase (grandson) of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi and Sallam). Muharram, especially Ashura’s day, reminds me of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, an important historical event in Islam. The Shia community celebrates it as mourning, while the Sunni community fasting and worships.

• Karbala incident: About 1300 years ago (in 61 Hijri), a war took place on the 10th place of Muharram at a place called Karbala in Iraq. The war took place between Imam Hussain and his 72 colleagues and a large army of Yazid (then Umayyad Khalifa).

• Sacrifice for justice and truth: Imam Hussain raised his voice against Yazid’s unjust rule and his disrespect. He refused to bow down to atrocities and sacrificed his life with his family and colleagues to save the principles of truth, justice and Islam.

• Mourning and mourning (Shia community): Shia Muslims mainly celebrate this day as mourning and mourning. He takes out a procession, remembering the thirst, hunger and martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his comrades, holds Majlis/ condolences and expresses his grief. On this day, people of Shia community do not celebrate any kind of celebration or happiness, but are immersed in mourning.

• Fasting and prayer of Sunni community Sunni Muslims also consider the month of Muharram as Pak, especially on Ashura’s day. However, they do not mourn. According to the Sunni tradition, many important historical events took place on this day, such as Hazrat Musa (Alaihissalam) to get rid of Feron. Why Taziya removes Taziya: The Tazia came from the Arabic word ‘Tajiyat’, which means to mourn or express condolences. The Tajiya is a symbolic replica of Imam Hussain’s mausoleum i.e. Roza-e-Mubarak, located in Karbala, Iraq.

• Remembering martyrdom: Tajiyas are mainly fired by Shia Muslims to remember and pay tribute to the martyrdom and sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his comrades. It is a symbolic representation of the tragic incident of Karbala, where Imam Hussain was martyred.

• Mourning procession: Large processions are taken out with the 10th (Ashura) of Muharram and the Taji around it. In these processions, people walk mourning, read the nauhe/ mourning and remember the sacrifice of Imam Hussain.

• Tributes and honors: The devotees show the tajis and show that they may not be able to go to Karbala, but they have the same respect and reverence for Imam Hussain in their hearts and will never forget their sacrifice.

• The tradition of Tajiya: In the Indian context, the tradition of extracting Tajia in India is many centuries old and it became especially popular in the Indian subcontinent.

Creating Tajiya and taking out its procession is considered a symbol of mourning and tribute. Its purpose is to remember the sacrifice given to Imam Hussain’s indomitable courage and truth, to give a message of standing against injustice and persecution, and to increase the spirit of humanity, justice and brotherhood in the society.

The Tajiyas are symbolic replicas of the tomb of Imam Hussain by the Shia community, which are taken out as a procession to remember and pay tribute to their martyrdom.
