The central bank said, it was later realized that it becomes easy to identify if there is a picture of a famous person on the bank note. If the design of fake notes is not good, then it becomes easy for people to identify real and fake notes from the picture of a famous person. In the Indian context, there were many celebrities whose picture could come on the note keeping in mind the design and safety characteristics of the note. For this, many famous people including Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa and Abul Kalam Azad were considered but finally agreed on Mahatma Gandhi.

Whose picture was there before independence

Prior to independence, there was mention of colonialism on the rupee and historical and political references in the British India. It contained a picture of vegetation and animals (tigers, deer). The grandeur of the British Empire on the rupee was depicted through ‘decorative elephants’ and ornate paintings of the king. According to the RBI, but when India became independent, gradually there was a change in the photographs printed in the rupee. Initially, on the rupee, the symbol of the lion of the Ashoka Pillar, the famous sites etc. were used. Gradually, with the development and progress of India, the rupee began to tell the story of development through pictures. Progress in the field of science in the country and the achievements of Green Revolution were carved out through photographs of Aryabhata and farming farmers etc. on the note.

Mahatma Gandhi’s picture on the note for the first time in 1969

According to the Reserve Bank’s website, for the first time in 1969, a memorial note of Rs 100 was issued on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth centenary. In this, his picture was shown with Sevagram Ashram. His picture regularly appeared on rupee from 1987. In October that year, 500 rupee notes were issued with Gandhi’s picture. With the development of reproductive technology, traditional security facilities were considered inadequate. A new ‘Mahatma Gandhi series’ was launched in 1996 with new security features.

The RBI has also stated through a recently released documentary to bring its functioning and roles to the people that it uses large transport systems including train, waterways, airplanes to deliver the rupee to every corner of the country from the printing press. This is the first time RBI works have been brought as a documentary. The documentary is named ‘RBI Unlocked: Beyond the Rupee’.
