The grand Rath Yatra, which takes place every year, attracts millions of devotees. But there is a secret associated with this temple, which has been attracting devotees and researchers for centuries – the incomplete form of idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. Why are these idols incomplete? Is there a divine story behind it or a deep symbolic meaning? Come, let’s know this mysterious saga in detail.
What is the secret of incomplete idols
The most prevalent story behind the incomplete idols of Lord Jagannath is associated with Lord Vishwakarma. According to mythological beliefs, after his funeral after the sacrifice of Lord Krishna, his heart (called Brahmadavya) was still beating. It was immersed in the sea. Later, Lord Jagannath appeared in the dream to King Indradyumna and directed that he should get his idol built with neem wood.
The king searched for a worthy craftsman for the construction of the idol. Then Lord Vishwakarma himself appeared there as an old carpenter. He laid a condition that they would build the idol in a closed room and no one would open the door of the room until the work is completed. If this happens, they will leave the work incomplete.
For several days, the sounds of carving wood from the room kept coming. But one day suddenly voices stopped. Rani Gundicha, who was highly curious and worried, thought that the carpenter had stopped work or something had happened to her. King Indradyumna opened the door after the queen repeatedly insisted. As soon as the door opened, he saw that Vishwakarma had left from there and inside, the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra were lying in incomplete state. His hands and legs were not made. The king realized his mistake, but now nothing could be done. It is believed that since then these idols are seated in this incomplete form.

Philosophical importance
Apart from this legend, incomplete idols of Lord Jagannath have a deep philosophical significance.
, The formless form of Brahma: Some scholars believe that this incompleteness shows the formless form of Brahma. God is unlimited, they cannot be tied in any full size. Incomplete sculptures give the message that the glory of God is so vast that he cannot be covered in any human limit. They are omnipresent and infinite.
, Maya and imperfection of the world: These idols also remind us that this world is mortal and is made up of Maya itself. Nothing is complete in the world. Everything has some incompleteness, which inspires us to move to spiritual perfection beyond materiality.
, Change and continuity: The idols of Lord Jagannath are replaced during every 12 years during a special ritual, called ‘Nav-Kalewar’. However, new sculptures are also made incomplete. This process reflects the cycle of life and death, continuity of change and eternal form of eternal religion.
