Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma recently surprised their fans by retirement from Test format and now every cricket fan wants to know whether these two will be seen playing the 2027 World Cup or not. Now India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has tried to answer this question. In an interview with News18, Gambhir shared his views on retirement of the two recently from Tests and emphasized that the team’s immediate attention is on the 2026 T20 World Cup.

After Rohit and Kohli retired from T20 and Tests, there is increasing speculation about their future in the ODI format. While the World Cup of 2027 is the next big ODI event, Gambhir insisted that it is too early to plan for this. He reiterated that the current priority of the T20 World Cup team of 2026 is.

Gambhir said, “We still have a T20 World Cup and this is also a very big tournament, which is going to be held in India in February-March. Therefore, at this time the entire focus will be on the T20 World Cup after England. There are still two and a half years left in November-December 2027. I have always said that if you continue to perform well, age is just a number.”

Speaking further, Gambhir said, “I think it is a very personal decision when you start the game and when you want to finish the game. No one has this right, whether it is a coach, selector or anyone in this country, to tell someone when he has to retire and when not. It comes from inside and yes, we have to play without two senior players. There is an opportunity to move forward and say, ‘Okay, I am ready for it.’ So yes, it will be difficult, but will surely be asked by the players who will be asked before the Champions Trophy, when Jasprit Bumrah was in the team.
