Konduga: While most women around the world, getting pregnant is like a beautiful dream, the situation in Nigeria is somewhat different. There is a lack of adequate health facilities in the conflict affected northern region here. Pregnancy is no less than a nightmare for women due to lack of health facilities. Many times the situation becomes such that both pregnant women and unborn baby die.

What happened to Ayesha Mohammed?

When a woman named Ayesha Mohammed was in the third quarter of her pregnancy, she started seizing and having a problem of high blood pressure (eclampsia). This is a major cause of the death of pregnant women. The only health clinic in his village had no doctor and the only medical center was 40 km from his village. According to the World Health Organization, most of the women die during delivery in Nigeria than any other place in the world. However, despite all the adverse conditions, Ayesha somehow reached the city of Maiduguri and in April she gave birth to twins through operation. Ayesha somehow stopped her tears from flowing and said, “Although children bring happiness, now I am afraid of getting pregnant thinking that I will have to go through the same pain again.”

Falmata Mohammed’s story is shocking

The story of another woman named Falmata Mohammed is similar. He suddenly started suffering from childbirth in 2021. She and her husband left for Maiduguri, 57 km away due to no hospital in her village Bulabilin Nagaura but she had bleeding on the way and gave birth to a dead child. America stopped help

The situation has become more difficult for pregnant women in the north-eastern part of Nigeria. The Boko Haram terrorist group is emerging again and the United States, which sometimes provided crores of dollars of foreign aid to Nigeria has also stopped providing financial assistance since Donald Trump became President. Roads are closed due to the fight. Many doctors and other health workers and support organizations have migrated. Nigeria has released an emergency of US $ 20 million for its health budget to make up to receive money from America.

How are the situation?

According to the World Health Organization, in 2023 too, more than a quarter of the world’s total maternal mortality rate (75,000) occurred in Nigeria. In this country with the most populous Africa, at least one out of every 100 woman dies while giving birth to a child. Even better situations cannot be expected here in the coming time.

Things are very difficult

Jumoke Oltunji, co-founder of ‘Albiyamo Material and Child Welbeing Foundation’ in Lagos, said, “If you count, you will feel that one of every five women are either struggling with mother’s illness or died. Health workers say that due to incidents of violence, it is becoming difficult to recruit doctors and other people in hospitals. (AP)
