Cow is our mother, cow is our mother, it is a relation of birth to birth. There has been a belief in India for thousands of years that cow is our mother. India has a relationship with cow for hundreds of births. In India, the festival of Gopasthami is celebrated with full rituals for the worship of cow. The festival of Gopashtami is celebrated seven days after the Govardhan Puja that occurs during Diwali. It is believed that seven days after Govardhan Puja, Nand Baba organized a ceremony for Shri Krishna and Mother Cow. Lord Shri Krishna and his elder brother Balram had taken the cow to graze for the first time on this day in their childhood. We celebrate the festival of Gopashtami because we are dependent on cows for our livelihood, that is why cow is revered in Hindu religion. Cow’s milk, ghee made from cow’s milk, curd and buttermilk are beneficial for humans. Cow urine is also very beneficial for humans. It is used for the prevention of many diseases. Cow’s milk is considered like nectar.
There are many mythological reasons for celebrating Gopashtami.
Gopashtami (Gopasthami) There are different mythological stories behind the celebration. According to a story Lord Krishna (Lord Krishna)
At the age of 6, he started insisting to mother Yashoda that now he had grown up and would take the cow to graze instead of the calf. Seeing his stubbornness, mother Yashoda sent him to seek permission from his father Nand Baba. Lord Shri Krishna also insisted on Nand Baba that he will now graze the cows. Nand Baba reached Shandilya Rishi’s ashram for the auspicious time of cow grazing. Sage Shandilya said with great surprise that apart from this time, there is no auspicious time till next year. That day was Gopa Ashtami. That day, Mother Yashoda prepared Shri Krishna well, put a peacock crown on him, put earrings on his feet and gave him sandals for his feet. But he refused to wear the padukas, he said that he will wear the padukas only if you make the cow also wear the padukas. That day Lord Shri Krishna went to graze cows without shoes.
It was because of cow grazing that Shri Krishna was named Govind and Gopal. The second story is that due to the wrath of Devraj Indra, it was raining continuously in Barsana. To save the people of Barsana from the rain, Lord Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger. From that day the festival of Govardhan Puja started being celebrated. On the day of Gopa Ashtami, Devraj Indra accepted his defeat. Then Shri Krishna removed Govardhan Mountain from his finger and placed it below. Another thing related to Gopa Ashtami is that once Radha wanted to go to the forest to graze the cows, but because she was a girl, no one asked her to graze the cows. But Radha disguised herself as a cowherd and went to the forest with Shri Krishna to graze the cows. That day is celebrated as Gopashtami.
On Gopashtami, the cow and its calf are bathed and decorated. Ghunghrus are tied around her feet and other ornaments are worn. After waking up early in the morning, the feet of mother cow are touched and a chunari is tied on her horn. After circling the mother cow, she is taken out for grazing. On this day, tilak is applied to the cowherds and donations are also given to them. When cows return home after grazing in the evening, they are worshipped. On this day, good food like green fodder, jaggery and green peas is given. Those houses which do not have cows go to the cow shed and worship them, offer Ganga water and flowers and also feed them jaggery. Some people worship Lord Krishna on this day and sing hymns of Lord Krishna. In this way, you must have completely understood the Gopashtami festival that comes after Diwali. Let us celebrate the festival of Gopashtami 2024 along with the entire country on Saturday, 9 November 2024.
