Zafar Panahi won the Palma Dor Award at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, dedicated to the people of Iran
World famous Iranian filmmaker Zafar Panahi won the biggest award of the 78th Cannes Film Festival for his film It Waz Just an accident. Hollywood’s famous actress Nicole Kidman honored Zafar Panahi with Zafar Panahi with the Best Film ‘Palma Door’ award at the closing ceremony of the Kan Film Festival at Canator Loomier, the Grand Theater Lumier.
When Zuliet Binosh announced the name of Zafar Panahi for this award, he stayed in his seat for some time. Later he said that how can I be happy here alone, while many of my fellow filmmakers and actors are jailed in my country Iran and many people have been stopped from making films.
Zafar Panahi has also been released from jail recently. He was sentenced to six years in 2010 and was banned from making a film for twenty years. He remained in the house arrest in Tehran for years. When Zafar Panahi’s name was called for the Palma Door Award, about three and a half thousand spectators stood up in the Grand Theater Lumier and expressed happiness by clapping for a long time.

Jury president Juliet Binosh said that Zafar Panahi has been struggling in his country (Iran) in a long time against dictatorship and religious fundamentalism for human dignity and freedom. The film is the story of one night in Tehran in which many interesting incidents occur after one after a simple car accident. It starts with vengeance and forgiveness to Karuna and also debate the morality of murder.
In the official press conference of the Cannes Film Festival after winning the award, Zafar Panahi said that I am very happy with this award but for some time I was lost in the memories of the fellow filmmakers, one by one, his faces started coming in front of me who were in jail with me and are still in jail. I dedicate this award to my Iranian public who is struggling for independence by putting a game of life.
He said that there was a time when no one knew Iranian cinema. Today Iranian cinema has a special identity in the whole world. Many Iranian filmmakers contributed to making this identity due to which we have arrived here. We spend life in making films and there is always a problem of money because we cannot take money from everyone. The reason is that if the money is not understood by the good cinema, then it will ruin the film. Today there is a problem of violence, war and dictatorship in every country. We hope through cinema that everything will be alright one day, peace will be maintained and everyone will get justice.

He spoke on the stage of the Grand Theater Lumier and at the press conference in Iran’s national language Persian which was first translated into French and from French to English. This is the first film of Zafar Panahi after being released from jail (2022). However, it is being said that he made this film without the permission of the Iranian government and in this film, women are shown wearing hijabs. This is a kind of cinematic resistance to the government hijab law. There has been a big movement in Iran recently on this issue.
After winning the Palma Door Award at the Cannes Film Festival, Zafar Panahi has become the fourth filmmaker in the world who has received the Best Film Award in all big film festivals. He has received the Golden Beer Award of Best Film for Taxi (2015) film at Berlin International Film Festival and ‘Golden Lion’ for ‘The Circle’ (2000) at Venice International Film Festival.
