Abuja. At least 19 children have died so far due to a suspected measles outbreak in Nigeria's northeastern state of Adamawa. Local officials gave this information on Saturday.

Felix Tangwami, Commissioner for Health in Adamawa, told reporters on Saturday that more than 200 children are suspected to be affected by the measles outbreak in Mubi North Local Government Area.

Official reports indicate that 19 deaths were caused by complications of the measles outbreak. Mr Tangwami said the development led to prompt provision of doctors and medicines to the affected communities.

He said children with severe infections would be sent to specialist hospitals, while blaming parents for refusing to vaccinate their children.

Measles is a viral infection that is common in children under five years of age but can be easily prevented through vaccines. It spreads through the air through respiratory droplets produced by coughing or sneezing.
