New Delhi, 02 April (HS). There is good news on the sugar production front. In the current sugar marketing year 2023-24, sugar production in the country has reached 302.02 lakh tonnes by March 31, 2024. In the last sugar marketing year, 300.77 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced on the same date. Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), an organization of sugar mills, has given this information.

ISMA said in a statement issued on Tuesday that in the sugar marketing year 2023-24, sugar production till March 31 was 302.02 lakh tonnes. On the same date of the last sugar marketing year, 300.77 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced. In this way, 1.25 lakh tonnes more sugar has been produced so far. The industry body has requested the government to allow export of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar in the current sugar season.

Industry body ISMA said that the sugarcane crushing season 2023-24 in India has reached its final stage. Because a large number of sugar mills have started shutting down operations. According to ISMA, the number of sugar mills operating across the country this year was more than 210, whereas on the same date last year, 187 mills were operating. At the same time, 322 sugar mills have now stopped crushing operations, whereas 346 were closed in the same period last year.

It is noteworthy that industry body ISMA in mid-March had revised its sugar production estimate for the current sugar season 2023-24 to 320 lakh tonnes, while domestic consumption is expected to be 285 lakh tonnes.
