New Delhi: Indian women, once the housemakers, are now conquering the top of the hills. In another remarkable achievement, a lady army officer, Captain Fatima Wasim, has left a legacy, adding a new chapter to the history of the Indian Army and creating a milestone by becoming the first-ever woman to be deployed at an operational post on Siachen Glacier.
How Captain Fatima Wasim achieved the milestone?
Captain Fatima Wasim of the Siachen Warriors is a woman medical officer from the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps, a part of the Army’s Udhampur-based Northern Command.
The rigorous training of Captain Fatima at Siachen Battle School made her capable of being inducted into a post at an altitude of 15,200 feet.
Narrating the story of her indomitable spirit and high motivation, the Siachen Battle School is situated at Siachen Base Camp and is a pre-induction training, orientation and acclimatisation centre for fresh troops. In addition, the battle school also acts as the launchpad for the deployment of the acclimatised troops, who are often deployed on a two- to three-month stint on the forward post.
The video promulgated by the Fire and Fury Corps on its official Twitter handle shed light on her glorious journey, highlighting her indomitable spirit, high motivation, and dedication for the Indian army and to the motherland.
What makes Siachen Glacier different?
Siachen Glacier, situated near the Indo-Pak Line of Control (LOC), is considered the highest-altitude battleground across the globe. The extreme climatic conditions and strategic importance of the glacier make it a challenging yet pivotal posting for the Indian Army. It is not only the country’s largest glacier but also listed as the world’s second-largest glacier.
Women empowerment in Indian Army
Captain Fatima’s achievement came just a week after Captain Geetika Koul from the Snow Leopard Brigade became the Army’s first woman medical officer to serve at Siachen. She achieved the feat following her rigorous training at the Siachen Battle School.
