The new Maruti Swift will go on sale in India on May 9, 2024, Autocar India can confirm. The all-new Swift will be one of the major launches for Maruti this year and will be followed by the all-new Dezire compact sedan in the market later this year. The new Maruti Swift (codename: YED) gets a fresh but familiar look, new interiors and features and an all-new petrol powerplant.

New Maruti Swift: India-spec details

The all-new Swift was shown internationally last year and since then, various test-mules have been spotted in India as well. The Swift coming to India will look more or less the same as the Swift sold abroad, but there will be some country-specific changes.

Sources tell us that the India-spec Maruti Swift will have slightly different-looking front and rear bumpers, although the changes will be minimal like the number plate housing will be larger and no contrasting black elements will be seen. Overall, the new Swift for India will still look similar to the cars sold abroad. The alloy wheel design is also similar but not exactly like the international car and the mid-variant will have a unique design. The C-pillar of the Swift coming to India will also be completely black like the Hyundai i20. However, the reverse camera is placed on the boot lid and not the rear bumper and the car will have full LED lights including LED fog lamps in the top variants. On the safety front, expect six airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP, and three-point seat-belts for the second-row middle passenger as standard. Sources tell us that the car coming to India will not get the 360-degree camera or ADAS that is seen in cars sold abroad.

New Maruti Swift will debut new 1.2-liter Z-series engine

The K12 four-cylinder petrol powerplant will be replaced by the new Z-series 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that debuted in the Swift in Japan last year. This engine will have India-specific changes with a greater focus on emissions, efficiency and power output. Talking about power, we are told that the Swift equipped with the new Z-series will have more or less the same output as the existing K12 engine which produces 90hp and 113Nm. There is no word on the transmission of the new Swift, although we expect Maruti to continue with a five-speed manual and AMT gearboxes that will be tuned for Indian conditions. The new Z-series petrol is expected to come with mild-hybrid technology in all variants.
