The health status of women and children in China improved significantly

The Chinese National Bureau of Statistics recently released a series of reports on New China’s economic and social development achievements over the past 75 years, showing that in the past 75 years, China has attached great importance to the development work of women and children. As a result, there has been a major change in the status of women and children in the country and their health conditions have also improved significantly.
The maternal and child health care system is continuously being strengthened. Since the 1950s, China has gradually established a maternal and child health service network with Chinese characteristics, with maternal and child health institutions as the core and grassroots medical and health institutions as the base.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (November 2012), the maternal and child health care service network has gradually expanded into a medical protection network covering a population of 1.4 billion and a tertiary medical care network covering urban and rural areas. Has joined.
According to statistics, the number of maternal and child health care institutions across the country has increased from 426 in 1950 to 3,031 in 2022. At the same time, the number of children’s hospitals has increased from 25 in 1983 to 151 in 2022. China has been listed by the World Health Organization as one of the 10 high-performing countries in maternal and child health. Maternal and child health care capabilities in China continue to improve, with women’s and children’s health improving significantly.
The average life expectancy of women in 2020 was 80.88 years, 11.61 years more than in 1981. Maternal mortality rates have declined steadily, from 88.8/100,000 in 1990 to 15.1/100,000 in 2023.
At the same time, neonatal mortality rate, infant mortality rate and mortality rate of children under 5 years of age across the country have fallen from 33.1 percent, 50.2 percent and 61.0 percent respectively in 1991 to 2.8 percent, 4.5 percent and 6.2 percent in 2023.
